Maja Nagelowa is a painter, graphic artist, photographer and film maker, and is ranked amongst the most significant contemporary Sorbian artists. The gallery presents her work in painting and film d'auteur, in which references to Lusatia, Lusatian myths and the history of he Sorbs appear frequently. Environmental issues are strongly reflected in her work – a landscape suffering from open-pit lignite mines that resulted in the destruction of several dozen Sorbian villages. Paradoxically, the planned closure of thermal power plants will have negative social and economic impacts on Lusatian Sorbs comparable to the destruction of their villages.
The exhibition takes place as part of the project Year of the Lusatian Serbs in the Liberec Region, 2019–2020.
